It took shape with the revolutionary seizures of 1792: the property of the clergy and of émigrés was confiscated, notably that of Marshal René Mans de Froulay de Tessé, who had emigrated to Switzerland in 1790 and whose private collection (around 400 works) formed the museum's core. The Abbaye Saint-Vincent and the church of La Couture were also drawn in, under the action of François-Yves Besnard, president of the Sarthe's directory. The museum opened free of charge to the public on June 21, 1799, in the buildings of the La Couture abbey, making it one of France's very first museums.\n\nIn 1822, the museum came under municipal ownership and was enriched by new donations. In 1846, a separate archaeological museum was created, whose collections were finally merged with those of the Musée de Tessé in 1940. The current building, a former bishop's palace built between 1872 and 1878 on the site of the former mansion of Marshal de Tessé (destroyed by fire), has housed the museum since 1927. After fitting-out work, it reopened to the public in 1949.\n\nThe latest major transformation came in 2001, with the creation of the underground Egyptian gallery devoted to the tombs of Nefertari and Sennefer, which has since become a central element of the museum's identity.",{"bus":45,"tram":46,"parking":47,"acces_sources":48},"Lines M, 8, 11 — Jacobins-Quinconces stop, 270 m · wheelchair-accessible stop","T2 — Croix de Pierre stop, 250 m · wheelchair-accessible stop","Parking 110 m away (74 spaces)","Data: SETRAM \u002F Le Mans Métropole (GTFS, Open Licence), © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL)","Musée des Beaux-Arts du Mans, offering a variety of guided tours, near the cathedral.","Housed at 2 avenue de Paderborn, in a former bishop's palace in the city center, the Musée de Tessé is one of the oldest museums in France. King Louis IX (Saint Louis) granted her the land in 1228. The founding charter of this Cistercian monastery for men is dated 1229, and an agreement settling a dispute with the Hôtel-Dieu de Coëffort was reached in 1230, the year twelve monks from Cîteaux, led by their abbot Jean, settled at l'Épau. Berengaria died in 1230, barely a year after the foundation, and was buried in the abbey she had founded. The church was consecrated by the bishop of Le Mans in 1234. Her recumbent effigy, now visible in the abbey church, remains one of the most moving witnesses to this history.\n\nThe monks drained the surrounding marshes and diverted the course of the Huisne to make room for construction, which progressed from south to north: church, sacristy, chapter house, dormitory and refectory, with Gothic embellishments added around 1260 to 1320. During the Hundred Years' War, the abbey was damaged in the 1360s (a fire in 1365 is traditionally cited, although recent historical work has nuanced this). In 1367, King Charles V authorized funding for the reconstruction using part of the ransom paid for the release of John II the Good. From 1479, King Louis XI imposed the commendam by appointing Thomas des Capitaines as the first commendatory abbot, breaking with the traditional monastic election and sparking conflicts, sometimes violent, such as under Abbot Macé Petiot in the 1490s.\n\nDuring the Revolution, an inventory was drawn up on August 28, 1790, and the monks left in October of that year. The abbey, now national property, was sold to an industrialist who turned it into a laundry and then a farm, keeping it in agricultural use for more than a century and a half. On June 18, 1959, the Sarthe departmental council bought back the abbey for eleven million francs and launched a major restoration respectful of its 13th-century architecture. The Department has held its assemblies there since the 1970s, and in 1982, at the initiative of its president Michel d'Aillières, created the Festival de l'Épau, today one of France's major classical music events (42nd edition in May 2026). Run by the nonprofit MJC Jacques Prévert under a public service delegation granted by the City of Le Mans, it offers a demanding program: works that research or discover new cinema, films of undeniable artistic quality, productions from countries rarely distributed in France, and revivals of classic films. Screenings are shown in French-dubbed versions (VF) as well as original-language versions with French subtitles (VOST).\n\nThe cinema takes part in three film-education programs (École au cinéma, Collège au cinéma, and Lycéens et cinéma) and regularly hosts retrospectives (Pedro Almodóvar, Jacques Tati) and themed festivals such as the Little Films Festival. The screening schedule, which changes every week with new releases, is published online and can be received by newsletter.\n\nAccessible by tram (Comtes du Maine – Office du tourisme stop) and bus, Les Cinéastes is part of Le Mans' cultural scene, alongside the MJC Jacques Prévert and its community radio station, Radio Alpa."]
