King Louis IX (Saint Louis) granted her the land in 1228. The founding charter of this Cistercian monastery for men is dated 1229, and an agreement settling a dispute with the Hôtel-Dieu de Coëffort was reached in 1230, the year twelve monks from Cîteaux, led by their abbot Jean, settled at l'Épau. Berengaria died in 1230, barely a year after the foundation, and was buried in the abbey she had founded. The church was consecrated by the bishop of Le Mans in 1234. Her recumbent effigy, now visible in the abbey church, remains one of the most moving witnesses to this history.

The monks drained the surrounding marshes and diverted the course of the Huisne to make room for construction, which progressed from south to north: church, sacristy, chapter house, dormitory and refectory, with Gothic embellishments added around 1260 to 1320. During the Hundred Years' War, the abbey was damaged in the 1360s (a fire in 1365 is traditionally cited, although recent historical work has nuanced this). In 1367, King Charles V authorized funding for the reconstruction using part of the ransom paid for the release of John II the Good. From 1479, King Louis XI imposed the commendam by appointing Thomas des Capitaines as the first commendatory abbot, breaking with the traditional monastic election and sparking conflicts, sometimes violent, such as under Abbot Macé Petiot in the 1490s.

During the Revolution, an inventory was drawn up on August 28, 1790, and the monks left in October of that year. The abbey, now national property, was sold to an industrialist who turned it into a laundry and then a farm, keeping it in agricultural use for more than a century and a half. On June 18, 1959, the Sarthe departmental council bought back the abbey for eleven million francs and launched a major restoration respectful of its 13th-century architecture. The Department has held its assemblies there since the 1970s, and in 1982, at the initiative of its president Michel d'Aillières, created the Festival de l'Épau, today one of France's major classical music events (42nd edition in May 2026).

The story begins in the mid-19th century, when the restoration of the Le Mans cathedral's stained-glass windows rediscovered the techniques of medieval master glassmakers. Le Mans then became one of France's leading capitals of painted glass, a craft that spread well beyond the Sarthe and beyond France's borders.

Organized in five sections, the exhibition highlights the great figures of Sarthe stained glass as well as the contemporary artists who have reinvented this technique, long used as a “book of glass” meant to instruct the faithful. Among the 20th-century master glassmakers featured are Maurice Denis, Auguste Alleaume, Gabriel Loire and Max Ingrand. The tour shows how the Le Mans region remains a land of innovation in stained glass, with many bold contemporary creations.

The exhibition runs January 23 to November 2, 2026, Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM–12:30 PM and 2–6 PM, at 2 rue Claude Blondeau in Le Mans.
48.007169,0.198622,"Le Mans","Musée Jean-Claude Boulard - Carré Plantagenêt","carre-plantagenet","2 rue Claude Blondeau","https://rxpslhyadfopswypqcpv.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/event-images/venue-carre-plantagenet.jpg
"6cda927875242dcd","Before it was a museum, the site had several lives. In the 13th century the Filles-Dieu convent settled here, where nuns lived under the Rule of Saint Augustine. In the 18th century the convent was dissolved and turned into a hospital-seminary for elderly and destitute priests. During the French Revolution the site was split into two lots and sold as national property; in 1795, the printer Charles Monnoyer bought one of these lots. The Monnoyer family, printers since 1618 (first in Paris, then in Le Mans), built a thriving print shop on the site that left a lasting mark on the city, until it ceased operations in 1986 under Paul Monnoyer, then 83 years old.

The current museum, designed by architect Bernard Althabegoïty, is the product of a major restoration of the former Monnoyer print shop and the Filles-Dieu convent, at a cost of about €20.2 million. Some parts of the old buildings were kept as architectural witnesses to the city's history. The Carré Plantagenêt opened on June 18, 2009, in the Saint-Nicolas district of Le Mans.

Note that Le Mans was among the very first French cities to open a museum after the Revolution, as early as 1799, with a collection first housed at the Abbey of La Couture and based in part on the bequest of Marshal de Tessé. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 2–6 PM; free admission on Sundays in August 2026.","The FIAA (Fonds International d'Art Actuel), based at La Visitation in Le Mans, presents an exhibition of Erró, real name Guðmundur Guðmundsson, a major figure of the Icelandic art scene and one of the most distinctive voices in narrative painting since the 1960s. Born in 1932 in Ólafsvík, Iceland, trained in Reykjavík, Oslo, Florence and Ravenna between 1949 and 1955, he settled in Paris in 1958 and developed a body of work that led to the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1969), the Centre Pompidou (1975–1976, then 2010) and the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon (2014).

The heart of his approach rests on a decision made in 1964: to stop inventing forms. Since then, Erró draws exclusively on existing images (comics, advertisements, political iconography, magazine pages), which he cuts out, sorts and assembles by theme before transferring them onto canvas. This collage process produces saturated compositions in which images of mass culture coexist without hierarchy with references to art history, in a style critics often call “baroque pop”: a bold profusion, at once satirical, critical and full of humor, that paints a teeming portrait of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

At the FIAA, the exhibition brings together 21 paintings, 11 original collages, and digigraphs and aquagraphs, mostly made between 2020 and 2023: a recent body of work that shows the constancy of Erró's gesture across more than sixty years of career. A 40-page catalog, published by Lelivredart, accompanies the exhibition.

On view May 22 to November 1, 2026, Tuesday through Sunday, 2–6 PM, at the FIAA Art Center, 1 rue Gambetta in Le Mans.
48.004148,0.195328,"FIAA - Fonds International d'Art Actuel","fiaa-centre-art-actuel","La Visitation, 1 rue Gambetta","https://rxpslhyadfopswypqcpv.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/venue-logos/fiaa-centre-art-actuel.png","https://rxpslhyadfopswypqcpv.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/event-images/venue-fiaa-centre-art-actuel.jpg
"165c23580dd40d16","FIAA opened in September 2020 on the initiative of Lucien Ruimy, an artist and organizer of the Puls'Art fair, in a contemporary building set within the historic La Visitation site.
