In 2001, the City of Le Mans launched the first edition of the “Le Mans fait son Cirque” festival. Between 2002 and 2008, the former pool was gradually converted, and in 2008 the “Cité du Cirque” opened, a circus school and artist residency center housed in the former pool building.\n\nStarting in 2016, performance, creative support, and teaching activities were brought together under a regional circus hub combining the Cité du Cirque and the City of Le Mans, with Richard Fournier appointed artistic director. In 2019, the process to earn the national circus center designation began. Construction of a permanent big top started in 2021, the year the Cité du Cirque changed its name to “Le Plongeoir – Cité du Cirque,” for the festival's 20th edition.\n\nRichard Fournier was appointed director of Le Plongeoir in April 2022, the year the permanent big top, designed by architect Christophe Theilmann, was inaugurated in November. It is located at boulevard Winston-Churchill, in the Sablons neighborhood (tram T1 and T2, Saint-Martin stop), and brings together two venues: the Chapiteau permanent, a wood-and-canvas big top with 400 seats around a 13-meter ring, and the Cité du Cirque, the former Sablons swimming pool converted into a training hall, classroom space, and residency space.\n\nContrary to what many people assume, the venue is not reserved for insiders. The Café du Chapiteau is open to everyone, Monday through Saturday: come sit with a book, a comic, or a game from the game library. Kids come on Wednesdays, and the lobby regularly hosts small activities. About once a month, a duo evening introduces the work of a company in residence, followed by a dance workshop or a game night: it is free and no registration is needed. During school holidays, free activities are offered for teens (Mondays), kids ages 5 to 10 (Tuesdays), and toddlers ages 1 to 4 (Wednesdays).\n\nAs for shows, the season is organized in “acts”: a dinner show in November, a December highlight focused on unusual aerial and acrobatic apparatus, shows for toddlers in the spring, and then the Le Mans fait son Cirque festival in May, on the Promenade Newton, where five or six big tops, a bar, and food trucks set up in a village open to everyone, with no barriers. Some thirty companies come each year to create their shows during residencies.\n\nTo practice, the Cité du Cirque has more than 500 students a year, from age 3 to over 65, across the four main families of circus arts (acrobatics, aerial arts, juggling, and object balancing). Introductory workshops run during every school break (family workshops from age 3, ages 5–7, ages 8–13, and teens), as well as weekend workshops led by artists. The building, with its cubic design around a large courtyard, covers 7,700 m², of which 4,000 m² are open to the public.\n\nIt offers a wide selection of collections (books, magazines, CDs, DVDs), access to the Inathèque, equipment for visually impaired readers, Wi-Fi, a digital space with digital-skills advisors on duty, and a 24\u002F7 automatic book return robot. It also has an auditorium and an exhibition space that regularly host talks, screenings and cultural events. Thematic areas are dedicated to youth, music and cinema.\n\nThe library also holds the network's most precious heritage collections: about 700 manuscripts (130 of them medieval), nearly 400 incunabula printed before 1501, some 130,000 volumes printed before 1909, and specialized collections on Maine (11,000 documents), automobiles (11,700 documents) and architecture (3,300 drawings and plans). King Louis IX (Saint Louis) granted her the land in 1228. The founding charter of this Cistercian monastery for men is dated 1229, and an agreement settling a dispute with the Hôtel-Dieu de Coëffort was reached in 1230, the year twelve monks from Cîteaux, led by their abbot Jean, settled at l'Épau. Berengaria died in 1230, barely a year after the foundation, and was buried in the abbey she had founded. The church was consecrated by the bishop of Le Mans in 1234. Her recumbent effigy, now visible in the abbey church, remains one of the most moving witnesses to this history.\n\nThe monks drained the surrounding marshes and diverted the course of the Huisne to make room for construction, which progressed from south to north: church, sacristy, chapter house, dormitory and refectory, with Gothic embellishments added around 1260 to 1320. During the Hundred Years' War, the abbey was damaged in the 1360s (a fire in 1365 is traditionally cited, although recent historical work has nuanced this). In 1367, King Charles V authorized funding for the reconstruction using part of the ransom paid for the release of John II the Good. From 1479, King Louis XI imposed the commendam by appointing Thomas des Capitaines as the first commendatory abbot, breaking with the traditional monastic election and sparking conflicts, sometimes violent, such as under Abbot Macé Petiot in the 1490s.\n\nDuring the Revolution, an inventory was drawn up on August 28, 1790, and the monks left in October of that year. The abbey, now national property, was sold to an industrialist who turned it into a laundry and then a farm, keeping it in agricultural use for more than a century and a half. On June 18, 1959, the Sarthe departmental council bought back the abbey for eleven million francs and launched a major restoration respectful of its 13th-century architecture. The Department has held its assemblies there since the 1970s, and in 1982, at the initiative of its president Michel d'Aillières, created the Festival de l'Épau, today one of France's major classical music events (42nd edition in May 2026). In March 2017, the site was officially renamed “Abbaye Royale de l'Épau” to highlight its royal character, brought to light by recent historical research.
