That initial route later hosted the ACO Grand Prix in 1911 and then the Coupe de la Sarthe in 1912. In 1920, Georges Durand, secretary general of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), came up with Charles Faroux and Émile Coquille the idea of an endurance race designed to test the reliability and technical progress of cars. The project was made official in 1922, and the first 24 Heures du Mans took place on May 26–27, 1923, with 33 crews on a circuit south of the city.\n\nThe track changed considerably over the century: 17.262 km long between 1923 and 1928, it was shortened for safety reasons to 16.340 km (1929–1931), then to 13.492 km (1932–1955) to accommodate the city's urban growth. In 1972, the Porsche corners replaced the Maison Blanche section, judged too dangerous. In 1990, two chicanes (Daytona and Michelin) were added on the legendary Hunaudières straight, nearly 6 km long, to limit top speeds that had unofficially reached 405 km\u002Fh with Roger Dorchy in 1988. The Tertre Rouge section was then reworked between 2007 and 2017, and the Porsche corners were made safer again in 2018, bringing the current length to 13.626 km.\n\nToday rated Grade 2 by the FIA, the circuit has 38 corners. Three-quarters of it is made up of public roads that stay open to traffic the rest of the year, and one-quarter of permanent circuit sections. A professional rider, he added a riding arena, an indoor ring, more stalls, and then organized his first competitions under the name Boulerie Jump.\n\nThe site grew in stages: first several tracks running at the same time, a formula then rare in France that allowed many riders to compete every weekend; then two large covered buildings for year-round competition, financed in part by 8,000 m² of solar panels on their roofs and by about forty riders attached to the site. Becoming the Pôle européen du cheval in 2010, it hosted European championships, earned recognition from the French Equestrian Federation (a center of excellence for competition in 2021), and was selected as a training base for the Olympic Games. Families come to watch the events, stroll the country paths and the cross-country course when there is no competition, browse the twenty or so shops (not just for riders), and grab a bite to eat: a self-service restaurant, a panoramic restaurant upstairs, and a crêperie during competitions. You can also come for a walk on weekdays; dogs are welcome on a leash.\n\nOn site, Le Mans Padel occupies one of the buildings: you can play there, but also have a drink or a pizza, every day of the week. On its 26 x 56 meter rink, the venue welcomes families, school groups, amateur clubs and curious visitors all year for lively public skating sessions, with skate rental on site, an equipment shop and a food area, the CityGlace Café. What sets it apart: unlike most French ice rinks, which are run by local governments, CityGlace is a fully self-funded private business, one of the only ones of its kind in France, along with the rink in Auxerre.\n\nOpen almost all year (closed only at Christmas), the rink adjusts its hours by season and has been one of the leading leisure venues in the Le Mans area for more than twenty years, with about 90,000 visitors a year."]
