King Louis IX (Saint Louis) granted her the land in 1228. The founding charter of this Cistercian monastery for men is dated 1229, and an agreement settling a dispute with the Hôtel-Dieu de Coëffort was reached in 1230, the year twelve monks from Cîteaux, led by their abbot Jean, settled at l'Épau. Berengaria died in 1230, barely a year after the foundation, and was buried in the abbey she had founded. The church was consecrated by the bishop of Le Mans in 1234. Her recumbent effigy, now visible in the abbey church, remains one of the most moving witnesses to this history.\n\nThe monks drained the surrounding marshes and diverted the course of the Huisne to make room for construction, which progressed from south to north: church, sacristy, chapter house, dormitory and refectory, with Gothic embellishments added around 1260 to 1320. During the Hundred Years' War, the abbey was damaged in the 1360s (a fire in 1365 is traditionally cited, although recent historical work has nuanced this). In 1367, King Charles V authorized funding for the reconstruction using part of the ransom paid for the release of John II the Good. From 1479, King Louis XI imposed the commendam by appointing Thomas des Capitaines as the first commendatory abbot, breaking with the traditional monastic election and sparking conflicts, sometimes violent, such as under Abbot Macé Petiot in the 1490s.\n\nDuring the Revolution, an inventory was drawn up on August 28, 1790, and the monks left in October of that year. The abbey, now national property, was sold to an industrialist who turned it into a laundry and then a farm, keeping it in agricultural use for more than a century and a half. On June 18, 1959, the Sarthe departmental council bought back the abbey for eleven million francs and launched a major restoration respectful of its 13th-century architecture. The Department has held its assemblies there since the 1970s, and in 1982, at the initiative of its president Michel d'Aillières, created the Festival de l'Épau, today one of France's major classical music events (42nd edition in May 2026). The Valois family had a country château built there, the “château du Gué-de-Maulny,” which remains in history as the birthplace of the future King of France, Jean II the Good (1319–1364), who reigned from 1350 to 1364. In 1359, during the Hundred Years' War, English troops marching on Le Mans destroyed the château and the adjoining chapel, forcing the clergy to retreat toward the city center. A collegiate chapel with the same name, moved to Place du Hallai, was not finally demolished until 1743.\n\nIn the industrial era, the city of Le Mans bought mills on the site in 1862 that harnessed the power of the Huisne. These mills were converted into water treatment facilities between 1900 and 1907, before being abandoned for lack of capacity, with the activity moved to L'Épau. The ford itself was replaced by a wooden bridge in 1872, then by a new footbridge installed by the city in 1987, after the site was fully absorbed into the urban fabric of today's park.",{"bus":380,"tram":381,"hours":382,"access":383,"acces_sources":67},"Lines T3, 13 — Pêcheurs stop, 250 m · wheelchair-accessible stop","Lines T1, T2 — Gares stop, 600 m · wheelchair-accessible stop","Open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day (free-access neighborhood facility)","Entrance on rue de l'Angevinière (72100 Le Mans), second access on the Gare Sud side. A free-access neighborhood facility, it has picnic tables, benches, a children's play area and a multisports space, making it a favorite relaxation spot for local families. A footbridge crosses the Huisne to a meadow where you can watch ducks along the riverbank, and dogs are welcome.\n\nSince 2018, the park has hosted an urban arts festival every year that mixes music and street art murals, helping give the site a cultural identity again. The redevelopment led by Le Mans Métropole also upgraded the multisports field and redid the entrance on the Gare Sud side.\n\nIts new play area, “La Mangrove,” comes from the park's location at the confluence of the Huisne and the Sarthe: a floodable site in constant contact with water. The city drew on that to create a tropical forest theme, with trees that grow with their roots in the water and whose big roots intertwine into a labyrinth, sheltering birds, fish and insects. Natural wood, ropes, foliage and immersive sets make up an adventure course where kids climb through branches, cross suspension bridges, slip between roots, look out from the lookout towers and zip along the zipline. A discreet treasure hunt awaits kids: count the colorful birds hidden in the structure.\n\nThe area is for ages 3–14, with a swing section open from age 1, and each piece of equipment is marked with the age it is meant for. Considered one of the finest swimming pools in Europe in its day, it welcomed more than seven million swimmers over nearly forty years before its last day of opening on June 16, 2002.\n\nAfter the Atlantides aquatic center took over, the former pool was converted into a venue for circus, becoming the Cité du Cirque and then the Chapiteau du Plongeoir. This open ground serves mainly as a setting for large circus tents and traveling structures. Each year, it hosts the festival “Le Mans fait son Cirque,” run by Le Plongeoir - Pôle national Cirque Le Mans, which sets up tents and activities for several days of performances, a large share of them free.\n\nThe promenade is part of a broader cultural complex in the Sablons neighborhood, alongside the Chapiteau and the Cité du Cirque Marcel-Marceau, together forming a hub dedicated to contemporary circus arts. With no permanent facilities and no publicly announced capacity, the space works as a flexible open-air ground built for large gatherings rather than for year-round indoor programming."]
