More about Les Saulnières

The Maison des loisirs et de la culture (MLC) Les Saulnières, at 239 avenue Rhin-et-Danube, runs year-round programs for the northwest neighborhoods of Le Mans. Its 600 m² modular performance hall has a stage, and the building also includes a professional kitchen (55 m²), a meeting room (30 m²), an art studio (86 m²) and a rehearsal studio. A wide range of leisure workshops run by local associations is offered: dance, music and singing, creative arts, sports and well-being, and homework support.

On the live side, the programming mixes live theater, music and comedy, shows for young audiences and talks. The venue also hosts artist residencies for local companies. The MLC Les Saulnières is a member of Superforma, a structure labeled Scène de musiques actuelles by the Ministry of Culture, which gives it a steady music program and a dedicated online box office. The amateur fanfare Takasouffler, which specializes in world music, rehearses there every Saturday and performs at carnivals and village festivals.

At the heart of the building is also a neighborhood library, open several days a week, with a digital space of eight computers available by reservation. Rooms can be rented by associations, businesses, condominium boards, public bodies or social organizations, at rates voted by the city council.

A bit of history

The Maison des loisirs et de la culture (MLC) Les Saulnières, at 239 avenue Rhin-et-Danube, was completed in 2002 under architects Véronique Doche and Alain Urvoy, for the City of Le Mans as client. The 6,122 m² facility, which cost about €4.75 million, was designed as a meeting place and activity hub for residents and associations of the northwest neighborhoods of Le Mans. It includes a 500-seat multipurpose hall, a neighborhood library, music and games rooms, and a space for dance, gymnastics and martial arts.

Since it opened, Les Saulnières has hosted live theater, music and comedy, along with residencies for local companies. The venue is a member of Superforma, a structure labeled Scène de musiques actuelles by the Ministry of Culture. The neighborhood library, built into the building, offers its collections alongside a digital space of eight computers. The site is also home to the amateur fanfare Takasouffler, which rehearses every Saturday and performs at carnivals and local festivals.
