The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis + Tatiana Paris

Three avant-garde projects respond to one another for one evening at the Scarron. Headlining is The Messthetics, a supergroup formed in 2018 around bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty, two pillars of the legendary punk-hardcore band Fugazi, joined by guitarist Anthony Pirog. Their DNA: an experimental, improvised “jazz punk jam” that blurs the line between underground rock and avant-garde jazz. Recently, saxophonist James Brandon Lewis joined the adventure, bringing “a new dimension” to their compositions; the first album featuring all four musicians came out in spring 2024 on the historic Impulse! label, an absolute reference in American jazz. Opening, Tatiana Paris performs under her stage name “t h a l l e,” for music described as “delicate and organic,” combining prepared guitar, voice, modular synthesis and organ, moving between noise and contemplation in a minimalist, exploratory vein. A demanding bill at the crossroads of jazz, punk and experimental music, programmed by Superforma, in the Scarron hall with standing general admission.
