More about Théâtre L'espal

The L'Espal theater is a 488-seat performance hall in the heart of the Sablons neighborhood in Le Mans. A designated performing arts center for dance since 2001, it presents theater, contemporary dance, music and circus arts, and has run the contemporary dance festival “Autre Regard” since 2006. The building also houses amateur workshops (dance, voice, improvised music, theater), exhibition spaces, and the L'Espal neighborhood library, which has served the Sablons since 1995.

Since 2018, L'Espal and the Théâtre des Quinconces (Place des Jacobins, city center) together form Les Quinconces-L'Espal, the national performing arts center of Le Mans, with a shared program and ticketing. L'Espal remains the neighborhood hub of this national center for the residents of the Sablons, reachable by tram (line T2, terminus Espal - Arche de la Nature) and bus (line 6).

A bit of history

L'Espal opened its doors in 1995, at the initiative of the City of Le Mans, as part of the policy of cultural decentralization: establishing a strong cultural facility within the Sablons housing estate, a priority development zone built between 1959 and 1978. Originally built around a research space and a media library, L'Espal became a designated performing arts center for dance in 2001, affirming its vocation as a place of choreographic creation and presentation.

In 2018, L'Espal merged its programming with that of the Théâtre des Quinconces, heir to the municipal theater opened in 1842 and rebuilt and inaugurated in its current form in 2014, to form Les Quinconces-L'Espal, labeled the national performing arts center of Le Mans. The two venues, historically distinct, have since operated under shared management and ticketing while each keeps its own neighborhood identity.
