More about Les Cinéastes
Les Cinéastes is a four-screen cinema with the Art et Essai label, located on place des Comtes du Maine in the heart of Le Mans. Run by the nonprofit MJC Jacques Prévert under a public service delegation granted by the City of Le Mans, it offers a demanding program: works that research or discover new cinema, films of undeniable artistic quality, productions from countries rarely distributed in France, and revivals of classic films. Screenings are shown in French-dubbed versions (VF) as well as original-language versions with French subtitles (VOST).
The cinema takes part in three film-education programs (École au cinéma, Collège au cinéma, and Lycéens et cinéma) and regularly hosts retrospectives (Pedro Almodóvar, Jacques Tati) and themed festivals such as the Little Films Festival. The screening schedule, which changes every week with new releases, is published online and can be received by newsletter.
Accessible by tram (Comtes du Maine – Office du tourisme stop) and bus, Les Cinéastes is part of Le Mans' cultural scene, alongside the MJC Jacques Prévert and its community radio station, Radio Alpa.
A bit of history
The nonprofit MJC Jacques Prévert has existed in Le Mans since 1978, with the goal of individual growth through exchange and conviviality. It now runs about thirty workshops (music, dance, theater, visual arts, well-being) and a local radio station, Radio Alpa.
Since 2004, MJC Prévert has operated the Les Cinéastes cinema under a public service delegation granted by the City of Le Mans. The complex, now made up of four air-conditioned screens accessible to people with reduced mobility, carries on Le Mans' tradition of independent cinema and film heritage on place des Comtes du Maine.
